Georgia Legislative Update–June 12, 2011
Final update on the bills Citizen Impact has been tracking in the Georgia General Assembly:
Senate Bill 10 relating to the Sunday retail sale of alcohol. Passed House and Senate; signed by Governor Deal.. This will allow local municipalities to offer referendums, giving residents the option to vote on whether to allow the sale alcohol in retail stores on Sunday.
Senate Bill 210 would make it easier for women to sue a doctor who violates state abortion laws in performing an abortion upon them, including a wrongful death claim for the death of baby. Passed the Senate, stalled in the House.
House Bill 325 relating to Student Scholarship Organizations. Passed House and Senate; signed by Governor Deal. Changes to this program include a limit on the amount of the scholarship awarded to a student — it cannot exceed the average the state spends on a student. (That number changes annually, so the Department of Education is required to determine and publish that figure by January 1 of each year.) Another change is an automatic annual increase in the $50 million scholarship cap based on the consumer price index.
House Bill 467 would provide for pari-mutuel wagering or betting on horse racing in this state. Stalled in Committee.
